Do you need to be Norwegian to join?
Absolutely not. Our kindergarten is open to families from all backgrounds, cultures, and languages. You don’t need to be Norwegian or speak Norwegian to join our community.
We simply recommend that families live within a comfortable commuting distance, so children can enjoy their days with us feeling settled, rested, and ready to explore.
Connecting children with themselves,
each other, and nature,
through play-based learning
A Bilingual Childhood
In the heart of Wimbledon, a quiet revolution in early years education is taking place. Rooted in Scandinavian values and shaped by a deep respect for childhood, our bilingual English-Norwegian kindergarten offers something both distinctive and wonderfully simple: time, nature and language woven seamlessly into everyday life.
Families do not need a connection to Norway to appreciate the richness of a bilingual start. Research consistently shows that early exposure to a second language strengthens cognitive flexibility, problem-solving skills and communication confidence. More than vocabulary, children develop sharper listening skills, empathy and an intuitive understanding that the world is bigger than one perspective. In our setting, Norwegian and English flow naturally through play, songs, storytelling and daily routines. Children absorb language joyfully and without pressure, gaining the lifelong advantage of being comfortable with linguistic diversity.
Our approach is inspired by the Scandinavian curriculum, which places equal value on wellbeing and learning. Childhood is not rushed. Instead, we nurture curiosity, independence and collaboration through meaningful, play-based experiences. There is a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, democratic values and respect for others - foundations that prepare children not only for school, but for life.
Integral to this philosophy is our commitment to outdoor learning. Whatever the season, our children spend generous time outside, exploring woodland spaces, climbing, building, observing and imagining. Nature is not an occasional backdrop but an essential classroom. Outdoor play builds resilience, risk assessment skills and physical confidence, while fostering a deep connection to the environment.
For Wimbledon families seeking something beyond the conventional, our kindergarten offers a warm, community-centred alternative. Here, children grow up bilingual not because they must, but because they can. They leave us curious, capable and confident - grounded in nature, enriched by language and ready to step into an increasingly interconnected world.
What parents are saying
My three kids have all been so happy here! It’s a very friendly, almost familylike atmosphere - perfect for those early years. The teachers are engaged and very creative. The kids get lots of time outside and learn about a wide range of topics. The staff are very experienced with children who have multi languages which was important for us as a French speaking Belgian family here in London. The children have made huge progress in both English and Norwegian.
— Joelle (Belgium)
I love that the kindergarten let’s the kids grow up surrounded by beautiful nature. And how they provide a safe and healthy environment for the children to grow with staff around them that puts the kids first and truly cares.
— Maria (Norway)
We had an amazing experience in the kindergarten. The staff is very caring and the space the kids have to play both inside and outside is superb. My son had previously been to a forest school which he loved and we were nervous about this move, but from the day one he loved it and in his own words he feels he has more “space” now than in the forest. I think the truly free flow environment is what gives them this feeling plus enjoying regular trips to the Commons. The well established and experienced staff is also a big plus and a big differentiator to other nurseries.
— Diana (Argentina)
The Scandinavian way
The Norwegian Kindergarten is all about play. We believe that play-based learning is essential for children’s development as it promotes creativity, problem-solving, independence and empathy. We don’t talk down to children, we have conversations with them - because every child has the right to be heard, seen and nurtured. And we believe that young minds grow best when actively exploring the world around together with adults who are curious and caring. We bring that sense of wonder and togetherness into everything we do throughout the day.
And finally, being Scandinavian means that being outdoors is in our DNA. We see the nature around us as the ultimate playground for young children – regardless of weather.
Accepting applicants now
We are a small kindergarten usually with about 15-20 children at all times. We enroll new children to join our little tribe any time of year.
SW London is a melting pot and that is surely mirrored by the lovely families in our community. We have parents from England, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Japan and USA to mention some. Hence, welcoming and integrating new children who may speak multiple languages is in our DNA.
Regardless if you are local or from abroad, please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you are looking for a nurturing, outdoorsy, nature-focused alternative for your child.
